Travel
Studying Abroad in Florence, Italy
In the spring of 2014, I made the best last minute decision of my life. As a competing Division 1 athlete, going abroad was never an option, however, while battling an injury that required resting my body, it seemed to be just the right medicine.
I had never been to Europe before, but it was worth the wait. Traveling at 21 years old allowed me to really appreciate where I was going―what I was seeing. As opposed to taking a family vacation at a younger age, this was an experience I will be able to remember. My program, API, included trips to Tuscany, Rome, and Vienna; however, I took this as an opportunity to see beyond Italy. I went to see the world.
In four short months, I traveled to 7 countries and 14 cities―eating, adventuring, and making lifelong friends along the way.
In Florence, I acquainted myself by joining the Societa Canottieri Firenze, a local rowing club
on the Arno River. I was the only American member at the time and we all struggled with the language barrier. I became good friends with one of the trainers, Massimo. While we rowed together on the water, he also trained me in the weight room. He would shout at me short phrases in English like, "YES YOU CAN!" I think it was one of the few things he knew how to say.
Though I saw more than I have ever dreamed of, the trip has only increased my desire to travel. Experiencing new languages, foods, and cultures shaped me into a more worldly, open minded, and independent person.
While I look forward to traveling to new lands, I feel as though Florence has become my second home. I can't wait until I'm back strolling down the cobblestone, frizzante and panino in hand.
